The Annual Family Health Street Fair

Each year, in commemoration of National HIV Testing Day (June 27th), Amethyst Women's Project sponsors an Annual Family Health Street Fair. Up to 50 health care provider organizations register and offer tabling on health related information and access to care. Health screenings are provided at no cost to community residents and include blood pressure screenings, STD screenings, viral hepatitis screenings, HIV testing, and referrals for follow-up care. In addition, children's rides, DJ and live musical entertainment, food and refreshments, and an awards ceremony round out the day's activities. In past years as many as 800 individuals, including many women, children and adolescents have participated in the health fair.

This year National HIV Testing Awareness Day occurred on Friday, June 25th. The Third Annual Family Health Street Fair will ocurred on West 20th Street between Mermaid and Surf Avenues in the heart of Coney Island. A police department permit was secured to close the street from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Between 40 and 50 health provider and community based organizations have agreed to set up information tables, register community residents for Child Health Plus and other low cost health insurance plans, provide free blood pressure, cholesterol, viral hepatitis, STD, and HIV screening, and engage the community at large in an extraordinary health festival. A stage will be set up with live and DJ music. Food and refreshments will be made available to community residents, and clowns, balloons and other entertainment will engage children.
